New Ohio jobless claims fall slightly

Ohioans filed 6,958 initial unemployment claims last week, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Thursday.

That number was 105 fewer than the previous week, the state said.

Ohioans filed 51,529 continued unemployment claims last week, which was 2,616 more than the previous week. The total number of claims filed from July 6-July 12 was 58,487.

The state unemployment rate in May was 4.9%, the agency said. The national unemployment rate in May was 4.2%. Ohio’s labor force participation rate in May was 62.7%. The national labor force participation rate in May was 62.4%.

Trumbull County’s unemployment rate in May was 5.9% with Mahoning County’s at 5.3%, the state reported. Out of Trumbull’s labor force of 90,300 workers, 85,000 were employed in May. In Mahoning, 100,110 out of 105,700 worked during the month.
