Liberty gunfire report still under investigation

LIBERTY — Weeks after a Fourth of July weekend incident, a resident living near it pressed officials for answers about what steps would be taken to improve the area.

Anthony Bruno, a Pleasant Valley Road resident, told trustees Monday that he has been to their regular meetings and noted that they’ve been focused on the abandoned Tibbetts Wick Road gas station, which has been brought up continuously in public sessions since April.

Bruno said he wanted to know what officials knew about the July 5 shooting in the 2000 block of Pleasant Valley Road, where a caller informed 911 of hearing numerous gunshots, followed by some leaving the Victory Christian School parking lot, and others running into a nearby wooded area.

He also wanted to know what they were planning to do about it.

“My request is that you shut that playground down over there; there’s gunfire coming out of there, and there’s gunfire coming back from Girard Lake,” Bruno said. “Somebody’s going to get killed.”

Bruno said he could not speak to the owners of the playground, alleging that the pastor speaks in circles and does what he wants to do, adding it’s a safety problem.

Police Captain Ray Buhala, who was sitting in for Chief Toby Meloro, said their investigation was progressing “really nicely.” Buhala said while he couldn’t speak too much on it himself, the department was confident they’d have a resolution soon.

Buhala said he spoke with Jack Simon, a former trustee with connections to the playground, about adding security cameras to the playground.

“We’re going to start the livestream not only in our squadron, but officers will have access to that as well because of where it (the playground) is at, the more rural end of the township,” Buhala said. “Officers will have the ability to spot check on their phones or their MBTs (mobile data terminal), along with several other cameras that we’ve collaborated with the schools.”

Bruno said he was pleased with Simon, who was put in place at the playground a year ago. He added there was an instance where he had to shut the playground down around 8 p.m.

Buhala said the church plans to do something similar.

“They’re going to add an additional door and lock on that gate, and they’re going to start to shut it down earlier in the day,” Buhala said. “Before the lights were on until 10 p.m; now they’re going to be shut down earlier, according to what I’ve heard.”

Bruno asked if it was too much to ask for the playground to be shut down completely, but Buhala said he didn’t know, because it is on private property.

“So I gotta accept bullets come flying past my house? There were 60 bullets, I heard. Did anyone get hit during that?” Bruno said. “Arnie, you’re more worried about that gas station. You should be more worried about that church.”
