Brookfield board hears updates on major projects

BROOKFIELD — The Brookfield Board of Education received an update Wednesday on a pair of the district’s ongoing projects.

Superintendent Toby Gibson said at the board’s regular meeting that the stadium turf project at George A. Nicholas Field, which crews began prep work for in May, is slightly behind schedule.

“We’re hoping that the base is done by the end of next week, and then next week, the carpet. The turf company will start staging I think Monday or Tuesday,” Gibson said. “And then it will be a quick transition.”

Gibson said he would let board members know if the turf would be done before the high school football team’s opening game against Hubbard on Aug. 22.

As for the district’s community learning center, which the district is setting up in the former Tiffany’s Banquet Center, Gibson reported that the interior demolition is complete, just three weeks after it began. School officials praised the efficiency of the demolition crew, KMB Demolition of Cleveland, for that progress, which wrapped up at the beginning of the week.

Gibson said Tom Madej, principal architect of Team 8e Architecture, and his engineers want to make sure “things were the way they thought they were.” After that, they’ll tweak the bid sheets and move forward with renovating the building, he said.

NEW PHONE SYSTEM

The board approved a proposal from TTX, a Cleveland-based IT provider, to upgrade the district’s phone system and monthly service. Gibson said the district’s present system is more than 15 years old, describing it as “antiquated.”

“The hardware is starting to fail, so the phones will go down periodically and they need to get rebooted,” Gibson said. “It takes time, and in that time, we’re left without phones.”

Gibson said the new system upgrades to a cloud-based system, which is cheaper than buying new hardware.
