Liberty man charged with felony domestic violence

BOARDMAN — A Liberty man will be in court Tuesday after allegedly strangling his girlfriend.

Brandon M. Jefferson, 29, of Mansell Drive, was arrested Sunday, charged with one felony count of domestic violence, a misdemeanor charge of the same and a felony count of strangulation. Court records show he was booked into the Mahoning County jail on a $25,000 cash or surety bond, which he posted Tuesday, jail records show.

He is scheduled to make an initial appearance in Mahoning County Boardman Court Tuesday.

The Boardman police report states that the woman came to the Boardman Police Department about 4:30 p.m. Sunday to file a domestic violence complaint against Jefferson and that he may have chased her there.

The woman told police the trouble began the night before, around 12:30 a.m., when Jefferson accused her of cheating and demanded to see her phone. She stated that when she refused, Jefferson jumped on top of her, put her in a headlock, tried to unlock her phone using facial recognition and punched her in the side of her head, the report states.

She did not call the police at the time. But that afternoon, she said there was another incident, when Jefferson allegedly stood in front of the chair where she was seated, brought a fist close to her face, then used an expletive and strangled her until she briefly blacked out.

The woman told police she regained consciousness to find him still on top of her, kicked him off and ran to her car, then drove immediately to the police station. She stated that when she arrived in the parking lot, she saw what she believed to be Jefferson’s car pass by on Market Street.

The report states the woman had visible injuries to her face and neck, but declined to be taken to the hospital.

Police learned that Jefferson had two prior convictions for domestic violence, which warranted a felony charge for the offense, in addition to the misdemeanor charge for the alleged attack the night before.

One of the convictions was in Girard Municipal Court, stemming from an incident in March 2019. In that case, Jefferson pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail with 58 suspended and two years probation.

The court record shows he committed at least 16 probation violations. It is unclear where else Jefferson was charged or convicted of domestic violence.

Sunday’s charges are the only counts against him in the Mahoning County system and there are no records in Trumbull County, or Youngstown, Warren, Niles or Campbell municipal courts.

After the woman filed charges, Boardman police issued a warrant for Jefferson and sent “be on the lookout” requests to Youngstown and Liberty police because of Jefferson’s known connections to those communities.

Within two hours, Liberty police notified Boardman that they had him in custody. Just before 8 p.m., Jefferson was released from Trumbull County jail and transferred to Boardman’s custody.

Girard Municipal Court records show he was charged in Liberty for one count of possession of drug abuse instruments, a second-degree misdemeanor.
