Court upholds conviction of former Akron officer convicted on child porn

WARREN — The Ohio 11th District Court of Appeals on Monday upheld the conviction and prison sentence of a former Akron police officer found guilty in 2024 on child pornography-related charges.

Geoffrey Parker, 34, of Mineral Ridge, will continue serving a 24- to 28-year sentence at Toledo Correctional Institution. The court rejected Parker’s appeal to overturn his consecutive sentences, affirming the decision in a ruling written by Judge Matt Lynch and supported by Judges Robert Patton and John Eklund.

Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Gabriel Wildman, who led the case, called Parker a “dangerous” and “predatory” offender, expressing satisfaction with the ruling. Assistant Prosecutors Charles Morrow and Ryan Sanders handled the appeal for the state.

The decision ensures Parker remains incarcerated, closing a case that has drawn significant attention because of his former role as a police officer.

Parker pleaded guilty to eight felonies, including three counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, three counts of pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor, one count of gross sexual imposition and one count of pandering obscenity involving a minor. One charge involved a child under the age of 1. Parker was also classified as a Tier 2 sexual offender.

Parker’s attorney, Martin Yavorcik, argued the consecutive sentences were excessive, citing Parker’s lack of prior criminal history, military service, remorse and supportive testimony from his wife, who requested probation or therapy.

The court, however, found no error in the trial court’s sentencing, with Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Ronald Rice’s imposition of consecutive terms upheld.
