Two men indicted in Mahoning indicted in Trumbull

Charges stem from string of robberies in both counties

WARREN — Two men accused of committing robberies early Jan. 3 in Trumbull and Mahoning counties have been indicted in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court on one count each of aggravated robbery with a firearm specification.

Tylin Fairchild, 31, of Clinton, and Shane T. Adams, 33, of Austintown, were indicted Wednesday on two counts each of aggravated robbery in Mahoning County in early January and are being held at the Mahoning County jail.

Adams’ bond is $50,000, and Fairchild’s is $16,000. Fairchild also was indicted on a single count of failure to comply with the order of a police officer, a felony that could result in several more years in prison if convicted.

The crime spree involved Austintown, Canfield and Liberty robberies, according to police.

According to a Canfield police report, an officer reviewing calls from elsewhere in the county at the start of his shift noticed a robbery at a Shell gas station in Austintown and started heading toward Canfield’s Shell station on East Main Street.

While en route, he saw a slender man wearing dark clothing sprinting from the Shell gas station and toward a former Perkins restaurant, where a Chevrolet Trailblazer was parked. An off-duty officer confirmed the gas station was robbed, and several Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers became involved, the report states.

The Canfield officer initiated a traffic stop on the SUV, but it only stopped momentarily. Then a chase at 50 mph to 60 mph ensued, with the Trailblazer running a red light and passing another vehicle and an ODOT salt truck, the report states. The SUV got away.

A Youngstown police report states that officers were told to meet up with state troopers near East Pasadena Avenue on Youngstown’s South Side about 7 a.m. to look for a black 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer believed to be connected to four robberies across Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Officers found the SUV at Powersdale and Cameron avenues, where state troopers advised they had one of the men in custody at Cooper and Union streets. The SUV was registered to Fairchild, Canfield police said.

The Canfield report stated that its officer found Fairchild in the back of an ambulance. Adams was also in custody and was transported back to Canfield’s police station.

Liberty police also identified Fairchild and Adams as suspects in an armed robbery at a Papa John’s Pizza shop on Belmont Avenue. That is the incident for which they were indicted in Trumbull County. They will be arraigned in the next several weeks.

VANCAMPEN CASE

Also indicted Wednesday was Caleb Vancampen, 24, of Laird Avenue in Warren, who is charged with aggravated possession of drugs and operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Vancampen, who pleaded guilty in February 2022 to a charge of felony vandalism for destroying statues outside of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica in Youngstown on Feb. 26, 2021, was sentenced Wednesday to 146 days in prison for violating terms of his treatment in lieu of conviction program stemming from the statues case. He also was ordered to receive mental health treatment and stay out of trouble.

Vancampen’s most recent violation was being charged with drug and traffic offenses in September in Trumbull County while he was living in Warren. He has been in the Mahoning County jail on the probation violation since Jan. 27.

The Trumbull County indictment accuses him of having in his possession or control amphetamine / dextroamphetamine and alprazolam. Another charge was driving a motor vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance and another was failing to control his vehicle — all on or about Sept. 9 in Trumbull County.

He also failed to report to his supervising officer at the Adult Parole Authority that he had an encounter with law enforcement as a result of the criminal charges, the indictment states.
