Masury man indicted on murder charge

MASURY — A Trumbull County grand jury on Wednesday indicted a Masury man in the shooting death of his sister.

John Zanolli, 61, of Third Street, pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated murder with firearm specifications, along with a fifth-degree abuse of corpse charge.

He was arraigned before Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Sean O’Brien, who set his bond at $2 million. He will appear in court again March 12.

The indictment comes after Zanolli was initially arrested and held without bond following his arraignment earlier this week in Eastern District Court.

He is accused of fatally shooting his 65-year-old sister, Janice Zanolli, in the head with a shotgun at their shared home on Third Street in Masury.

According to a Brookfield police report, the incident unfolded after a family member requested a welfare check on Janice Zanolli, who had not been heard from for several days. Officers said they responded to the home around 10:15 a.m. Saturday and found Janice dead.

John Zanolli was discovered in another room, holding a rifle to his head and threatening to take his own life, prompting a brief standoff with law enforcement.

After about 30 minutes of negotiations, Brookfield police Chief Aaron Kasiewicz said officers used stun guns to subdue Zanolli and safely remove the firearm.

Zanolli later told police he shot his sister on Wednesday and remained in the house with her body until Saturday. This led to an abuse of corpse charge.

Authorities have suggested that family tensions, including a dispute over their late father’s estate, may have played a role in the shooting. F. Patrick Zanolli, 91, a former industrial arts teacher for the Brookfield Local School District, died in September after a sudden illness.

The siblings were reportedly in the process of probating his estate, which included the Third Street home where the shooting occurred.

Starting at $3.23/week.
