Suspected illegal fireworks cause damage
BROOKFIELD — Suspected illegal fireworks caused a blast radius that led to significant damage to six homes and shattered windows.
Brookfield police are investigating.
The explosion happened around 10:45 p.m. on the Fourth of July, but police Chief Aaron Kasiewicz said the department received several calls two days later from victims in the 7900 block of Budd Street reporting damage to their windows.
The chief said there was at least a 3-mile blast radius, with reports of people at the Circle K on South Irvine Avenue and U.S. Route 62, feeling it, along with reports from the Hilltop Gardens apartments on Addison Road, about a quarter mile away.
People in the area of the Brookfield Community Park on Stewart Sharon Road in Hubbard also reported feeling the blast.
Kasiewicz stated there’s a person of interest who was setting fireworks off the night the explosion occurred, believing them to have been either modified or homemade ones that caused the incident. The chief said possible charges and violations could arise for the fireworks, but said criminal damage charges would apply considering the damage to homes in the area.
