Mother allegedly intoxicated while picking up kids from school

WARREN — A mother who is accused of being intoxicated while picking up her two children from school appeared in Warren Municipal Court on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor charges of child endangerment and a DUI charge.

Raedonna Hightower’s name had been redacted from a Warren police report but an additional department document names Hightower, 50, of Starlite Drive NW, as the arrestee and the reference number to the alleged offenses matches the one listed on the report.

Hightower was arrested Wednesday but was released Thursday after posting a $2,500 personal recognizance bond with a condition that she’s not allowed to drive at all until further notice of the court.

Court records say Hightower is due back in the courtroom of Judge Patty Knepp on May 28.

A Warren police report states the school staff alerted the school resource officer about 2:15 p.m. Thursday about a suspected intoxicated parent there to pick up her children. The school staffers say the mother handed them a slip to sign the two juveniles out of school, but police say there were “no legible words or letters” on the release form. Instead, the report states the paper only had lines and scratches written in pen.

As the officer went outside to speak to Hightower, the report states a staffer yelled out, “She just hit your cruiser!” The officer reported that Hightower struck the left side of the rear bumper of a cruiser as she tried reversing away from the vehicle.

The report states police yelled at Hightower to stop and ran to the vehicle’s driver’s side as the officer instructed the mother to turn off the vehicle and remove the keys from the ignition.

The two juveniles were taken from the vehicle and released by the school into the custody of a family member. The report says the mother’s vehicle was impounded.
