Ex-caretaker accused of stealing from veteran
WARREN — A former caretaker accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a 99-year-old World War II veteran pleaded not guilty to three felony charges in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court on Thursday.
Felicia Splitstone, 35, appeared before Judge Ronald Rice for her arraignment on charges of fourth- degree theft from a person in a protected class, receiving stolen property and fifth-degree forgery. She also posted a $2,500 bond.
Splitstone was hired through a Pennsylvania-based caretaker company by the victim’s family after a medical emergency. She was accused by the family of forging the war veteran’s signature on six checks equaling about $4,450, according to a Brookfield police report.
The family of the elderly man told police most of the checks were made out to Splitstone while one check went toward a company the defendant rents from.
The owner of the caretaker company previously told the Tribune Chronicle Splitstone had been fired in late December for a matter unrelated to the accusations against her.
