Buggies, motor vehicles can’t share the lane

MIDDLEFIELD — Township trustees will reach out to the state patrol for signs warning vehicle drivers to stay out of the horse-drawn buggy lanes.

John Kochy, a community resident, voiced some of his concerns on this issue.

He lamented that drivers are speeding in the buggy lane on state Route 528 when one is waiting to turn. He wanted to know how to get the proper signage because this section has no sign.

Concern was raised that the smaller horse-drawn vehicles being used sit lower than the traditional family buggy and are more difficult to see.

One of these days someone could be killed, Kochy said. He said drivers are in too much of a hurry to wait for the person in front of them to finish turning and, at times, are using the buggy lane to pass several vehicles.

It was decided that a letter will be sent to the Ohio State Highway Patrol for signage to address drivers using the buggy lane for passing, and to remind drivers to be more attentive. A buggy lane is not a passing lane.
