YSU concrete canoe team wins second in national competition

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University’s Concrete Canoe Team won second place overall in the American Society of Civil Engineers Concrete Canoe Championships earlier this month at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

The team also scored first place during the final product. It scored second place during the men’s sprint race, women’s slalom and in oral presentation.

It scored fourth place in the co-ed sprint race and fifth on the design paper.

“The canoe team has demonstrated exceptional work and is more than deserving of these awards,” the university stated. “We are proud to have them as members of the organization.”

The team members are team director Elizabeth Williams, co-captain Morgan Scott, construction and lead paddler Bailey Brothag, aesthetics lead Cassandra Snopik, design lead Joe Remish, co-captain and paddler Jersey Gorby, paddlers Alicia Lonsinger, Evan Fink and Michael Sandora and members Kayla Mathias, Christine Zheng and Emily Honthy.

Their practitioner advisers are Associate Project Engineer Daniel Phillips and Adam DePizzo.
