Niles approves resurfacing projects

NILES — City Council on Wednesday passed two ordinances authorizing funds for resurfacing projects at the Niles Senior Center’s parking lots and at an abandoned rail crossing on Mahoning Avenue.

Council authorized the moving of $23,780 from its general fund for the SCOPE Center project.

The council discussed resurfacing the lots during budget meetings last year and wanted to get the project started quickly so it could be done in correlation with the center’s upcoming reopening, city officials said.

In March, council approved a $135,165 contract with AVI SPL for technology upgrades at the SCOPE Center, which is the normal site of city council meetings.

These upgrades will include a projector, 160-inch screen, stationary cameras, new desks for council and administration, a new sound system, microphones for each public official and a new podium with a microphone for residents.

Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz said he wants the resurfaced parking lots to be part of the reopening, which hasn’t been scheduled.

Council also authorized the moving of $17,350 from its general fund for resurfacing Mahoning Avenue.

The city will be removing a section of railroad tracks on the road and installing asphalt.

The tracks were once privately owned, but since the railroad company has not maintained the tracks, the city will be removing them.

“The railroad is not taking responsibility,” Mientkiewicz said. “Some of the businesses aren’t even there. … The plan is to remove and resurface.”

Mientkiewicz said both resurfacing projects will be put through the city’s board of control today and that he hopes the projects will be done before the end of May.

In other business, council:

• Authorized the service director to lease printers, copiers, and a service / maintenance contract from Crosby Mook Office Equipment in Warren;

• Authorized the disposal of three vehicles, one street dump truck, one water dump truck, and one sewer backhoe, to be sold on Govdeals, an internet auctioning website. Council said the city no longer needs the vehicles.

Starting at $3.23/week.
