Engineer’s office to help Falls with covered bridge
NEWTON FALLS — The Trumbull County Engineer’s Office is assisting the village in getting repairs and improvements made to the closed historic covered bridge.
Steve Papalas with the engineer’s office told officials Wednesday after discussions about fixing the bridge and placing the project out for bids, a bid of $762,000 was received, which would be covered by insurance.
He said the project was put out for bids twice with no bids received the first time. The project was rebid, with the $762,000 being the lowest.
There was an issue with the water level below the bridge being high but Papalas said crews will be working on the bridge in June.
“It is an historical bridge. The county does not have that many covered bridges,” he said.
The bridge has been closed for several years after it was damaged when a vehicle traveling inside crashed into the sides.
The Newton Falls covered bridge connects Bridge Street with Arlington Road and crosses one of the two branches of the Mahoning River that cut through Newton Falls.
Constructed in 1831, the bridge still accommodates autos over the East Branch of the river.
Officials have said the bridge is the second-oldest covered bridge in the state, the only one in Ohio with a covered crosswalk, and the last covered bridge in Trumbull County.
