Remembering Pearl Harbor at program

The Tribune Chronicle and Kent State University at Trumbull partner for ‘Tested by Fire’ event

CHAMPION — The Tribune Chronicle and Kent State University at Trumbull once again will present the annual Pearl Harbor and Beyond program on Dec. 7 at KSU Trumbull’s administration building.

This year’s theme is “Tested by Fire.” Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The pre-program will feature swing dancers and live music by Jerry and Marilyn Mong; a USO collection for deployed soldiers, and a World War II Wall of Honor, all in the commons area, and Pearl Harbor footage in the auditorium.

Suggestions for the USO collection include white socks, travel size soap or shampoo, sunscreen, drink-mix packets, lip balm, trail mix, raisins, beef jerky, hand sanitizer, hard candy, granola bars and instant oatmeal packets.

The program, which begins at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium, will feature the Pledge of Allegiance; presentation of colors by the Civil Air Patrol from the Youngstown Air Reserve Station; singing of the national anthem my Channing Fox; posting of the colors; and an invocation by Youngstown Air Reserve Station chaplain Jeffrey Lichlyter.

The story of Stanley Drwall, who was on the ship USS Oklahoma, which was sunk at Pearl Harbor, will be told by moderator Harold Ryther. A video interview with Private Frank Holko of the 4th Infantry Division that landed on the beach of Normandy will be shown. It was recorded and edited by Melissa Trickett. This will be followed by an interview with Frank Holko’s son, Jerry.

Trickett’s video interview with Petty Officer Jeff Littal of the USS Montpelier, which shot down two Kamikaze planes, also will be shown, followed by a live interview with Littal.

The program will close with benediction, retiring of the colors and closing comments as time permits. The program is scheduled to end at 7:30 p.m.
