Man shot, killed by Struthers police

YOUNGSTOWN — Struthers police shot and killed a man Friday afternoon following a vehicle chase that started on State Street in Struthers and ended on Youngstown’s West Side.

Struthers police Chief Tim Roddy had few details on what led to the chase and officers attempting to stop the vehicle; however, he said the driver attempted to strike the officers with his vehicle, which took off on Interstate 680 toward Youngstown.

Officers from Youngstown joined the pursuit as it headed toward the West Side, but Struthers police were the lead agency, according to Roddy.

Officers stopped the vehicle as it was making a turn onto Steel Street from Salt Springs Road, and used a stun gun on the driver, who then pulled out a gun. Struthers officers fired on the driver and killed him, Roddy said.

He said per department policy, the officer or officers involved will be placed on paid leave while the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation investigates the shooting. Roddy said he was unsure how many officers fired at the driver.

It was unclear what time the pursuit started, but Youngstown police Capt. Jason Simon said his officers joined the chase around 5 p.m. He said no Youngstown officers were involved in any use of force during the incident.

Starting at $3.23/week.
