Former teacher faces sex charges
Involves 15-year-old student at River Gate school in Warren; man was dismissed in Feb.
WARREN — A former mathematics teacher with the River Gate High School in Warren was arrested Thursday morning on a secret indictment for sex charges involving a 15-year-old girl student.
Jordan Owens, 29, with addresses at 1708 Niles Cortland Road, Howland, and 1223 North Road, Apt. 3, in Niles, pleaded not guilty to two counts importuning, and one count each attempted sexual battery, disseminating matter harmful to juveniles and illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance. He appeared at an arraignment before Common Pleas Judge Ronald J. Rice shortly after being booked into the Trumbull County jail at 9 a.m. Thursday.
Bond for Owens was set at $20,000, and the judge ordered him to not have contact with the victim. The next pretrial in the case will be Wednesday before Judge W. Wyatt McKay, court records show.
According to prosecutors, the victim in the case, which was investigated in October by the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office, was a 15-year-old girl student at River Gate. No other details about the case were available.
According to River Gate principal Jason Cooper, Owens taught mathematics at the life skills organization prior to being dismissed in February. His book-in record at the jail showed that Owens most recently worked as a driver for Door Dash.
Owens was released from custody around 4 p.m. Thursday, jail record show.
