Ohio nearing 1M cases of COVID-19

Vaccination effort continues as 23.34 percent of residents have gotten at least one dose

More than 2.7 million Ohioans have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination as of Saturday, according to the Ohio Department of Health, representing 23.34 percent of the state’s residents.

Of those that received their shots, 1,576,541 have completed their immunizations, representing 13.49 percent of the state’s total population. As of Saturday afternoon, an additional 44,239 Ohioans completed their vaccinations.

Since Ohio began providing vaccinations, 26,580 Trumbull County residents have completed their vaccination regimens, representing 13.43 percent of the county’s population. In Mahoning, 35,322 residents received all of their shots, representing 15.45 percent of the population. And in Columbiana, 13,514 people completed their vaccination regimens, representing 13.26 percent of the population.

In Ohio, of the 2,728,608 residents who received at least one dose of the various coronavirus vaccines, 2,169,955 were identified as white; 177,736 were identified as black; 172,013 whose racial identities were recorded as unknown; and 135,660 were identified as other.

The state is getting about 400,000 vaccine doses per week, which will go up to about 500,000 starting March 29. That’s also the date everyone at least 16 years of age in Ohio will become eligible to get the vaccine.

The state lowered the eligibility age to 40 on Friday.

In the last 24 hours, 1,483 new cases were reported in Ohio, with 50 hospitalizations and no new deaths, which are only reported by the ODH on Tuesdays and Fridays. Mahoning County added 27 new cases Saturday, bringing its total to 19,829. Trumbull County reported 12 new cases for a total of 14,733. Columbiana added just four new cases, bringing its total to 8,283.

Ohio is about to eclipse 1 million cases with the nearly 1,500 reported Saturday. The state total is 998,819.

The state reported that cases per 100,000 Ohioans dropped to 143.8. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine previously said the state will rescind its pandemic-related health orders at 50 cases per 100,000.
