Illinois woman facing local drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN — An Illinois woman was federally indicted on one charge of possession with the intent to distribute cocaine after a June traffic stop near the Braceville exit in Trumbull County netted a cache of drugs.
Tashe Goins, 32, of the Chicago area, was driving a 2018 Nissan Pathfinder near mile marker 209 of the turnpike just before 5 p.m. June 16 when she was stopped by an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper for a lane violation, according to a federal Drug Enforcement Agency affidavit.
Goins told troopers she was traveling from her home to Pittsburgh. The trooper deployed his canine, Iso, around the exterior of the Pathfinder. The dog alerted the trooper to a narcotic odor. A subsequent search netted about four kilograms of suspected cocaine found inside a blue suitcase in the rear cargo area, the affidavit states. The substance was tested and came back positive as cocaine.
At a status hearing last week in Youngstown court, Goins waived her right for a speedy trial. The case had been held up because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the court record states.
Judge Sara Lioi set a trial date for 8 a.m. Feb. 1 for federal court in Youngstown, with a final pretrial set for 1 p.m. Dec. 28.
Goins has been freed since June 25, according to court records, but is being electronically monitored at home.
