Cyclist dies in Mecca crash

MECCA — A man from Cortland was killed, and a woman is in critical condition after a car-motorcycle collision Saturday afternoon on state Route 46.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol in Southington, James Thomas, 53, and his passenger, Shanna Thomas, 48, were going northbound on a 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle at 1:40 p.m. when they collided with a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Dolores Kalas, 87, of North Bloomfield.

Kalas was attempting to turn left into a private driveway. The Thomases were ejected from the motorcycle as it traveled off the right side of the road, according to the patrol report.

Both James and Shanna Thomas were transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where James Thomas was pronounced dead and Shanna Thomas was listed in critical condition.

Kalas was not injured, the report states.

Motorcycle helmets were not in use, according to the patrol. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. Trumbull County Sheriff’s Department, Mecca Fire and EMS and Cortland EMS assisted at the scene.
