Mecca Township trustees seek water, sewer service

MECCA — Trustees are gauging interest in having water and sewer service extended along state Route 46 by having petitions available for people to sign at township hall.

Trustee Fritz Birkhimer said the petition is only to see if there are enough residents — 75 percent — who would be interested and what the costs would be if the project were to proceed. Once a cost is determined, trustees can see if grant money is available.

Birkhimer said sewers could be extended along Route 46 from the center both north and south, and water would come from Cortland to the township’s northern border at Greene.

He said if enough people sign the petition, trustees then can meet with the Trumbull County Engineer’s Office to determine the cost and scope of the project. Meetings would be held with residents before a final decision is made.

Birkhimer said he has gone door-to-door in some areas with the petition and there has been some interest. He said residents have wells for water and septic systems for sewage.

Residents with questions can contact a trustee.

In other business, Trustee Dan Galbincea said he has had calls from residents of the flooding caused by recent heavy rains.

He said residents in the Housel Craft Road and Edgewater Road areas have had much flooding.

“The ground is very saturated. In the past few weeks, we have had more rain fall in such a short time than I have seen in 46 years,” said trustee Jim Governor, who noted many farms have flooded fields.

Officials said they will do what they can, but noted the entire county has suffered from flooding.

Starting at $3.85/week.
