Mother charged with child endangering
HUBBARD — A city woman has been charged with child endangering after police found her daughter alone for the third time in less than three years, according to police.
Kelly Huffman, 32, 62 School St., was charged as a result of police being called about the child on multiple occasions. She is to be arraigned in Girard Municipal Court Tuesday.
The child was seen walking alone with no coat or backpack on Myron Street at 8:07 a.m. March 21, according to a police report. The outside temperature was about 36 degrees.
When Hubbard police Sgt. William Fisher drove up to 562 Center St., where the girl was seen standing on a porch, the girl ran from the porch, onto Myron Street and out of sight, the report states.
A few moment’s later, a man called out to a police car, saying he had a lost little girl. When the girl saw the police officer, she started crying, the report states.
“No, I’m scared,” she said. “I don’t like the police.”
After convincing the girl to allow Fisher to drive her to school, she said she was looking for her father.
An elementary school principal identified the girl as a first-grader.
Huffman was already at the police station trying to locate her daughter, the report states.
“I didn’t know she was gone and when I realized she was, I came here,” Huffman said. “Her father lives in the apartments on Gladys.”
According to police records, the child was left outside alone with no coat on Feb. 18, 2017, on a 35-degree day. On July 7, 2016, there was a report about the girl walking alone in the Hubbard Library parking lot.
