Last area Kmart stores set to close

Howland store listed in latest round of shutdowns

HOWLAND — The last Kmart in Trumbull County will close in April, cut off in another round of national restructuring announced Thursday by Sears Holdings Corp.

Super Kmart, 2100 Niles Cortland Road SE, in the Eastwood Mall complex, is the last Super Kmart in the nation that sells groceries, said Joe Bell, a spokesman with the Cafaro Corp., which owns the Eastwood Mall complex.

Also closing is the Kmart store at 2235 E. State St. in Hermitage, Pa. Sears Holdings closed the Kmart on Parkman Road in Warren in 2016.

Sears Holdings, which owns both Sears and Kmart, said Thursday the latest round of closures affect 64 Kmarts and 39 Sears stores across the country that it says have been underperforming in their markets.

“We had some heads-up from headquarters that this may be coming,” Bell said. “We did not receive official word until today (Thursday).

“Our Sears store is fine,” Bell said. “We have been told it will remain open.”

Bell said Kmart and Sears have been spiraling downward for five to 10 years, so the fact that some stores would be closing was not a surprise.

“It is sad to see the employees of these stores lose their jobs,” he said.

Union representatives for the employees couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday night.

The company stated in its announcement that “eligible associates impacted by these store closures will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Kmart or Sears stores.”

A spokesman for Sears Holdings declined to say how many employees will be affected by the closings.

Sears Holding said it is “right-sizing” the number and size of the stores in its inventory.

“We will continue to close some unprofitable stores as we transform our business model so that our physical footprint and and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members,” the company said in its statement.

In 2006, the company reportedly operated more than 3,000 locations in United States and a few hundred in Canada. That number was down to about 1,000 stores in the U.S. by the end of 2017. Sears Canada filed for bankruptcy last year and is in the process of closing everything it has, according to reports.

The rise of online businesses has been cited as a reason traditional stores are struggling.

Bell said Cafaro Corp. has been talking to one or more retail stores to take over the Super Kmart location for more than a year.

“Unfortunately, this type of situation has occurred and will happen again,” Bell said. “They will continue paying rent on the space.”

Bell said the space where the Super Kmart is now is a prime location that will be attractive to other retailers.

Liquidation sales will begin as early as Jan. 12 at the stores, the company stated.

Starting at $3.23/week.
