Trumbull voters approved 5 of 7 school issues
While voters across the Buckeye State approved 115 of 150 school tax issues on the Nov. 8 ballot, voters in Trumbull County approved five of seven they faced, according to incomplete, unofficial results from the Trumbull County Board of Elections.
Voters in Champion, Lakeview and McDonald local school districts and in Warren City Schools approved renewal levies, while new school tax initiatives at Hubbard Exempted Village School District and Mathews Local Schools were defeated.
A 7.1-mill, 10-year emergency operating levy in Hubbard would have generated $1.4 million a year, which is the same amount district officials said the district lost in state funding since 2009. In Mathews, the 7.45-mill bond issue and 0.5-mill levy would have been used to pay for the district’s share and maintain a new K-12 school complex.
The issue in Hubbard fell 55 percent to 45 percent. In Mathews, the attempt went down 52 percent to 48 percent.
Across the state, voters approved 56 percent — 41 or 73 — of new school tax issues and 96 percent — 74 of 77 — of renewal levies, according to the Ohio Schools Boards Association.
Many school districts are having to rely more and more on their local communities for financial support because of funding challenges, reduced revenues and an uncertain economy, according to the OSBA.
“It is encouraging that despite continuing issues with the economy, communities continue to support their local schools,” said Damon Asbury, director of legislative services OSBA.
Asbury added this election saw the second highest rate of levy approval in Ohio in 13 years.
In Mahoning County, school renewal issues in Boardman and Sebring were approved by voters.
An examination of November 2015 election results shows the only three tax issues on the ballot — a bond issue in Champion, an additional levy in Newton Falls Exempted Village School District and a renewal in Bristol Local Schools — all were approved by voters.
