The woman told officers the man pushed himself into the apartment and locked her out. She could later hear things breaking inside the apartment, the report states.
When officers knocked at the door, the man wouldn’t come out, the report states. As the officers knocked, a fire alarm inside the apartment began to go off. An officer standing by the window saw flames inside the apartment. Using fire extinguishers, officers broke the window to find smoke everywhere. Officers, who put out most of the fire, were able to climb into the apartment through the window and open the front door. Furniture was stacked in front of the door, the report states. The sprinkler system had engaged, the report states, and officers began to search the apartment for the suspect. The fire department arrived to put out any hot spots in the apartment, the report states.
The man, identified as Alonza Malik McCall, 42, was found in a bedroom and carried into the complex’s parking lot to wait for emergency medical responders. McCall was taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital, and the suspect became combative while an officer stood by on guard at the hospital.
Municipal Court records show that McCall has been charged with aggravated arson, but no arraignment date has been set.
