Seeing Eye: SCOPE offers session on artificial floral arranging
FLORAL ARRANGING: The Howland SCOPE Center will offer artificial floral arranging 1 to 3 p.m. Friday. Students will receive materials, tools and a project instruction sheet. The instructor will be Gail Hanes of Howland. The fee for each class is $30, payable at the time of registration at the Howland SCOPE Center, due one week prior to each class. This fee includes only the cost of materials as Gail volunteers her time. For information, call 330-609-7806.
THEMED STORYTIME: The Girard Free Library will host a themed storytime at 10 a.m. Tuesday with Tom the librarian and Tochi the therapy dog, who is part of Furever Friends Therapy Dogs, a nonprofit registered with the state of Ohio. People can pet Tochi afterwards.
ALZHEIMER SUPPORT: Alzheimer Network support group will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Guiding Light Presbyterian Church, 890 Churchill Hubbard Road. Because of winter weather, dangerous road conditions and a recently announced flu variant, the group is initiating a “call-in reservation policy” for those who wish to attend one of the regularly announced support groups. The alternative method to reach the Alzheimer Network is to call 330-788-9755 anytime to speak about concerns.
SNOW BOX DERBY: A snow box derby will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Kinsman near the Kinsman Free Library. Participants are invited to build a cardboard sled for the event. All ages are welcome. Following the event there will be a potluck lunch at the Kinsman American Legion at 3 p.m. For information or to make donations to the event, call Norma at 724-674-0274.
FIRST RESPONDERS TRAINING: The Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities will host specialized training for law enforcement, first responders, agency providers and school staff at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the school. Diane Dudziak, a nationally recognized developmental disabilities and law enforcement specialist and former police officer, will lead the session. The focus of the training will be on improving communication, safety and deescalation techniques.
MENS NIGHT OUT: Yellow Brick Place Cancer Support Center will host Men’s Night Out, a community health education event, March 4 at Leo’s Ristorante in Howland The event will focus on providing honest conversations about men’s health topics that are often difficult to discuss. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., followed by a complimentary dinner at 6 p.m. Registration is required by Feb. 26. For information or to register, call 234-228-9550. PRESS CLUB CONTEST: Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania high school students and their advisers can win prizes of up to $200 in the second annual Youngstown Press Club Scholastic Journalism Award contest. Entries are being sought from students in Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Mercer and Lawrence counties.
Entry deadline is March 18. Submissions will be judged by a panel of press club members. Contest details are available at YoungstownPressClub.com. WOMEN RETIREES SCHOLARSHIP: The Youngstown State University Women Retirees are accepting applications for their scholarship through March 1. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time junior female student with a maximum GPA of 3.0 The recipient must also be a U.S. citizen and be enrolled in a degree seeking program.
