Niles inducts 5 into hall of fame

NILES ALUMNI TO HONOR INDUCTEES: The Niles McKinley High School Alumni Association will host the 27th annual Hall of Fame recognition dinner Aug. 24 at Ciminero’s Banquet Centre, 123 Main St., Niles. This year’s class includes Thomas Connelly, Ralph Dublikar, Rich Lemon, James Nicastro and Thomas Rossi. Social hour is at 5 p.m. and dinner is at 5:30 p.m. The cost for dinner is $35. Reservations can be made by sending your check (made out to: Niles Alumni Association) to: Nancy Jayne, 317 Cedar St. Niles, OH 44446 Paid reservations will be listed at the door the night of the dinner. Reservations must be made by Sunday. Past inductees or family members are recognized at the dinner. The football game honoring the inductees is Aug. 21.

GRAND OPENING: River Gate High School, 1133 E. Market St. Warren, will host its grand opening of the new location and book bag giveaway 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. There will be food, tie dye, a deejay and face painting.

STUFF THE BUS: For the 15th year, Huntington Bank is teaming up with United Way to support local students as they head back to school. This year, the partnership is doubling its impact by donating 2,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to children across Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, and Mercer Counties for the 2025-26 school year. The event will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley Volunteer Resource Center, 8133 Market St., Boardman. Employees from Huntington Bank will be joined by volunteers from Great Clips to pack backpacks with essential school supplies. These backpacks will be distributed directly to local schools identified by United Way to ensure they reach students most in need.

WARREN SCHOOLS BTS CELEBRATION: The Warren City School District is hosting its annual Back to School Celebration 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Courthouse Square in downtown Warren. Students, parents, teachers and school administrators will gather to celebrate the start of the 2025-26 school year. There will be refreshments, games, raffles and entertainment.

GRIEF 101: McKinley Memorial Library will present “Grief 101” 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the McKinley Birthplace Home in Niles.

Participants will learn about the grieving process and how to create a new normal as they work through your grief. Presented by LSW Bereavement Facilitator Kimberly Calhoun from Mercy Health Hospice of the Valley by Compassus. Registration is required at 330-652-1704, ext. 3.

“SWEENEY TODD” TRIP: The Trumbull County Travel Club is organizing a trip to the Rabbit Run Theater in Madison on Saturday for a performance of “Sweeney Todd,” winner of eight Tony Awards.

The outing includes deluxe motor coach transportation, a full-course dinner and a wine tasting at Grand Rivers Winery before the 7:30 p.m. show at the historic barn theater.
