Niles to break ground for project

NILES GROUNDBREAKING: Niles will break ground at 11 a.m. Friday at the corner of Main and West State streets for the Downtown Riverfront Revitalization Project.

The $3.5 million project is fully funded by the Appalachian Community Grant Program.

Included in the project are Niles Public Square on the grounds of the former Robins Theater site and Riverside Park canoe and kayak launch at the corner of First and Brown streets. The project is one of many that aims to transform downtown areas along the Mahoning River throughout the Mahoning Valley.

PRESSURE GAUGE TESTING: The Ohio State University Extension Office, 520 W. Main St., Cortland, will host a pressure gauge testing open house 9 to 11 a.m. today, and a drying fresh produce at home class 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today. or safe home canning, the USDA recommends pressure canner dial gauges be tested annually for accuracy. To have a gauge tested, bring your pressure canner lid and gauge, or just the gauge. The free class will be on the basics of dehydrating fresh produce at home.

OLDER ADULTS DAY OUT: The fourth annual Older Adults Day Out free senior health and wellness fair will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St., Youngstown. There will be vendors, free lunch, entertainment and chances to win prizes

FAMILY FUN DAY: The Girard American Legion will host a Family Fun Day and membership drive 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at 11 High St., Girard. There will be food trucks, a bounce house, children’s games and a movie.

SALE AT THE LAKE: The Conservation Club at Mosquito Lake will host a “Sale at the Lake” 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the club grounds.

NAACP MEETING: The Trumbull County NAACP chapter will have an executive officers meeting noon to 1 p.m. Saturday and a members meeting 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library.

BACK TO SCHOOL GIVEAWAY: East Side Church of Christ in Niles is hosting a Back to School Giveaway at 11 a.m. Saturday, while supplies last. Children must be present. One bundle will be given per child.

UPTON OPEN HOUSE: The Upton Association will host an open house 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Guests can tour the historic home of Harriet Taylor Upton at 380 Mahoning Ave. in Warren. Upton was one of the key women who worked for the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Her home, built in 1840, was the headquarters of the National American Woman Suffrage Association for several years. The open house will feature a display of vintage banks from the collection of Judi and Terry Sheridan.

NWNA MEETING: The Northwest Neighborhood Association’s monthly meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Monday at Grace Methodist Church on Drexel Avenue, Warren.

The guest speaker will be Tony Ramos, a representative from NOPEC, who will explain how and why our electric bills have increased. Deb Reel, marketing coordinator from Mobile Meals, will inform attendees about the organization.

Socks for the Warren Family Mission are being collected and the church pantry is always in need of nonperishable food items.
