Area unemployment falls in September

Unemployment dipped in the Mahoning Valley from the August to September reporting periods, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported.

Mahoning County saw a 4.7% unemployment rate in September compared to 5.7% the prior month. The state said 4,900 of Mahoning’s 104,200 workforce did not hold jobs in September.

Going from 7.5% to 6%, Youngstown witnessed its unemployment figure fall 1.5 percentage points during the same period. Of the city’s 22,100 workers, 1,300 were unemployed in September.

Trumbull County’s rate fell from 6.2% to 5.1%, the state reported. For September, 84,300 out of the county’s 88,800 workers had been employed. The city of Warren saw its unemployment rate fall from 8.3% in August to 6.7% in September. The workforce numbered 13,800 in the latter month.

The figures were not seasonally adjusted.

Ohio’s unemployment rate in September was 4.8%. The national unemployment rate in September was 4.4%. Ohio’s labor force participation rate in September was 62.4%. The national labor force participation rate in September was 62.4%.

For the week of Dec. 7-13, Ohioans filed 8,736 initial unemployment claims, which was 1,363 fewer than the previous week. Ohioans filed 50,732 continued unemployment claims for the period, which was 3,079 more than the previous week.

The total number of claims filed was 59,468.
