Foxconn: ‘Power, venue and timing’ prompted sale

Foxconn confirmed Monday that Lordstown will be at the center of its artificial intelligence ambitions.

Its chairman, Young Liu, told media outlets that the Taiwanese electronics giant and Japan’s SoftBank are partners in OpenAI’s Stargate Project. That work will take place at Lordstown’s Foxconn Ohio plant, which SoftBank purchased for $375 million earlier this month.

“We understand that for this project, the first priorities are power, venue and timing — it cannot be delayed for too long,” Lui told Reuters. “Taking all these factors into account, we believe Ohio is a very suitable location, and SoftBank shares this view.”

Endorsed by President Donald Trump, Stargate is a $500 billion, four-year project meant to bolster the nation’s AI infrastructure. According to OpenAI’s website, SoftBank is one of four lead partners, joined by OpenAI, software company Oracle and United Arab Emirates investment firm MXG.

“Reports that SoftBank has acquired the Lordstown facility and will partner with Foxconn to manufacture data center equipment for the Stargate project is tremendous news for the Mahoning Valley,” said Guy Coviello, CEO and president of the Youngstown / Warren Regional Chamber. “We enthusiastically welcome SoftBank to our community and look forward to the transformative opportunities this venture will bring.”

He said the Chamber has met with SoftBank representatives and called the talks encouraging.

“We are proud of Foxconn’s ongoing commitment and are energized by SoftBank’s decision to invest in the Valley. … (The) convergence of these global leaders with OpenAI and Oracle signals a bright future for our community.”

Coviello said the announcement “underscores that the Valley is not only competitive but essential to the industries of the future.”

Locally, the project represents not only innovation but jobs, investment and “a new era of growth,” he added.

Liu told the media that Foxconn and SoftBank spent more than six months negotiating an agreement.
