TAG displays members’ work

About 60 area artists are showing their work in an exhibition opening Saturday at Trumbull Art Gallery — no juror required.
While the juried TAG Annual show will celebrate its 60th edition later this year, the downtown Warren gallery moves toward spring with a TAG Member Exhibition. All members were invited to submit up to two works for display with no entry fee and no juror determining what makes it on the walls.
Gallery director William Mullane said TAG used to do non-juried member shows back in the 1970s when it was the Trumbull Art Guild, but it hadn’t done anything like that for decades.
“It’s been forever since we did this and it’s a nice perk of membership, if you’re an artist, to be in a show and not have to spend money to enter,” Mullane said.
Mullane wasn’t sure whether he would get 30 or 300 submissions. TAG is displaying everything submitted, about 105 works, which makes it comparable in size to the TAG Annual.
There’s plenty of art without overcrowding the galleries. He described it as an eclectic mix.
“Some of our crafts people don’t think about entering an annual, which is more two dimensional,” he said. “We have quite a bit of three dimensional work. I have more cubes (for displaying three-dimensional pieces) and large sculptures than we do for an annual.
“People seemed to be really happy to have the opportunity to participate and were interested to see what other people brought. Some of the artists were like, ‘I want to put something in that I wouldn’t enter in a juried show because it was new or different.'”
Participating artists are: Tony Armeni, Brenda Armstrong, Douglas Barnes, Maxine Barnes, Diane Beatty, Russell Bragg, Michael Cantelmo, Richard Chabek, Scott Chopko, Patricia Cleary-Talstein, Sharon M. Dundee, Veronique Gerard, Debbie Gold, William Griffin, Susan Griffin, Richard Martin Hahn, Ed Hallahan, Charles Hargenrader, Joan Harless, Millie Hawkins, Deborah Hills-Haney, Kimberly Hunter, Kathryn Infante, Susan Jacobs, John Johnson, Charles Kish, Connie Kolarik, Salli Kowalski, Ron Krygowski, Robyn Maas, Julie Martin, Elise McKeown Skolnick, Nancy McLean, Jana Measures, Denese Montecalvo, Zane Moriarty, Jacki Mountan, Rick Muccio, Rebecca Nan, Tom Ott, Kristi Pal, Angela Pascoe, Jeffrey S. Mullane submitted two pieces, a self-portrait in the style of 16th century artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo and a more political work that is part of a series of protest paintings.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about painting regularly after many years of not, so doing a painting like this (self portrait) lets me play with a variety of shapes and materials and objects and to manipulate paint again.”
In addition to being included in the member show, Charles Kish is TAG’s Artist of the Month for March with several works on display in the TAG store.
Kish is a Youngstown State University graduate with a degree in fine art who lives in Masury and has been self employed in the sign industry for more than 35 years.
