Holiday concert raises funds for food bank
The Youngstown Area Community Concert Band and the Stambaugh Chorus will raise funds for Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley with the 15th Holiday Concert Of Giving.
Both the band and chorus are volunteer groups featuring musicians and singers from all over the Mahoning Valley.
The Stambaugh Chorus, directed by Youngstown State University Professor Hae-Jong Lee, will perform first, and its program will include “O Holy Night,” “Mary Did You Know” and “Sleigh Ride.”
The YACCB, conducted by Joseph Pellegrini, will then take the stage for the second portion of the show. The theme will be “My Favorite Things” as the band performs some of Pellegrini’s favorite pieces as he steps down after leading the band for 35 years. Pellegrini’s successor, Todd Maki, will be introduced at the concert and conduct an arrangement of the 1970 Carpenters’ hit “Merry Christmas Darling” with Pellegrini as alto saxophone soloist.
Some of their selections will include “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “The Polar Express” and “Ave Maria”.
The finale of the concert features both groups performing together with Pellegrini and Lee sharing the conducting duties on such songs as “Christmas Canon,” “White Christmas” and the traditional closer, “Hallelujah Chorus”, from Handel’s “Messiah.”
Prior to the concert, ensembles from the YACCB will entertain guests as they enter the auditorium.
The Holiday Concert of Giving starts at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. Admission is free, but monetary donations (cash or check) will be collected for Second Harvest.
Both groups share the cost of the concert, so 100% of the money collected goes directly to the food bank.
Since 2011, the annual concert has raised nearly $64,000 combined for the food bank.
