College’s Foster Art Gallery displays Bukovec’s ‘menu’

The work of mixed media artist Morgan Bukovec is featured in an exhibition at Westminster College’s Foster Art Gallery in New Wilmington, Pa.

Bukovec, who earned her bachelor’s degree in fine arts and arts education from the University of Dayton, works with objects found across mediums including collage, textiles, installation and ceramics. She focuses on the themes of identity, storytelling and fleeting moments and objects across time.

Her “are you on the menu” exhibition contains a series of embroidered guest checks with various negative phrases, questions and comments taken from her own experiences with male customers.

According to the artist, “Each remark, command and question are quotes taken from my experiences as a server with male customers. This series is a personal release and a way to gain ownership over the words said to me by men. This series breathes with intention. The guest checkbooks have made their way into my life as I unconsciously bring them home, accumulating them over the years of serving and bartending. The sharp point of the sewing needle is a metaphor for the pain of microaggressions that slowly and unconsciously reveal themselves and worsen through repeated infliction.”

The series has been awarded multiple exhibition opportunities (including a 2024 show at the McDonough Museum of Art), speaking engagements, a gift grant by the Kanyer Art Collection and has been featured in national publications.

Guests of the exhibit are asked to share their stories using blank guest checks that are available for personal participation and reflections.

“are you on the menu” will be on display through Dec. 5. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
