‘Rust Belt Gothic’ event planned for book release
Bill O’Rly celebrates the release of his debut short story collection with “Under a Steel Moon: A Rust Belt Gothic Experience.” The immersive event blends performance art, music, folklore and speculative fiction to mark the release of “Rust Belt Gothic: Volume I.”
Illustrated by Rachel Lynn Clifford with cover photography by Nea Bristol, the book chronicles a haunted Mahoning Valley where “steel mills collapsed into silence, slag heaps groan in the dark and old neighborhoods remember more than they should.”
“This isn’t imported horror. It’s born of the Valley itself — our ruins, our memory, our ghosts. Every story is forged in rust,” O’Rly said.
It will include performances by Steel City Sirens Burlesque and Ms Waskin and The Radio; a dramatic reading by Starlett O’Hara (Robert Dennick Joki of Rust Belt Theater Company); Victorian Paper Moon portraits by Nea Bristol; fortunes and numerology readings; a haunted tea service and a vendors market.
“Under a Steel Moon” runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Studio South Art Exchange and Home Again Consignment + Design, 7687 South Ave., Boardman. A suggested donation of $5 is requested, and proceeds will benefit Full Spectrum Community Outreach and Rust Belt Theater Company.
