MV Punk Flea will span multiple venues

It will take three venues to contain the first Mahoning Valley Punk Flea on Saturday.

The inaugural event will feature vendors and music from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The founder of the flea is Niles native Cory Weddell.

“I lived for a couple of years in Ravenna and just moved back to the area last year,” he said. “While I was living there, they would have a punk rock flea in Akron a couple of times a year and one in Lorain a couple of times a year. I would go to those, and they were just a ton of fun, hundreds of people, all kinds of vendors, bands.

“After I moved back, I was talking to some friends about how that was really the one thing I missed, being closer to all that. And they said I probably know enough people that I could put one together myself. And the more I thought about it, that is something I can do and it’s maybe something that we need.”

Weddell originally planned to do it in Youngstown, but the venue he was working with was unable to host it.

Adam Keck and Sarah Braun Keck, owners of Modern Methods Brewing Company, offered that venue for the event, but Weddell already had too many bands and vendors booked to fit there.

The Modern Methods-affiliated Darlene Lounge was added as a second location and The Underground Lounge was approached as the third venue.

Live entertainment will be featured on two stages.

The Modern Methods Stage in David Grohl Alley will feature Proud House of Schmucks at 1 p.m., Wasted Society at 2:30 p.m. and Pink Masquerade at 4 p.m.

Performing at the Underground Lounge will be The Hazards at 1:45 p.m. and The Frantic Nancys at 3:15 p.m.

“The Frantic Nancys I had seen at Modern Methods while I was putting the lineup together, and I thought these guys would be great,” Weddell said.

“As I was trying to come up with some other bands, some of my friends told me to talk to Nate (Offerdahl) at Westside Bowl, and Nate has been a great help in all of this. He put me in touch with Pink Masquerade (from Akron), who have a sister band, Wasted Society. Through them and through the internet, I was able to contact The Hazards (from Cleveland). And once we started to get a little bit bigger, I was reaching out to bands that were farther away. Proud House of Schmucks actually came to me and said that they wanted to come to the area because of the great music tradition that we have here.”

About 40 vendors will be set up at the three venues selling books, records, baked goods, handmade items, taxidermy and more.

So what makes the event “punk” beyond the music?

“There’s sort of an ethos behind it, a spirit of the event,” Weddell said.

“I really wanted to live up to the spirit of punk rock. First of all, it had to be weird, and second of all, it had to do something to give back to the community. At the heart of it all, punk rock is about a community.”

Modern Methods will create a special beer for the event with proceeds benefiting Thrive Mahoning Valley.

“They do so many great things,” Weddell said. “They have bicycles for families with young children that they give away. They help people with things like English translation services for people who are new to the area. They hook people up with transportation services. They’re really kind of a widespread charity with a local, personal focus.”

The goal is to make the MV Punk Flea a recurring event.

“I’d like to see how the first one goes before I make any specific plans,” Weddell said, “but I would like to do this at least once a year and focus on a different charity each year to spread the love around.”
