Gray Areas: Music on Saturday, lit festival deadline nears

Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:

• It’s a crazy busy Saturday for music lovers.

Five bands will play in downtown Warren Saturday afternoon as part of a brand new event (the Mahoning Valley Punk Flea), and Roxfest finds a new home in Warren. Previews of those events can be found elsewhere in this section.

Red Wanting Blue plays its first Mahoning Valley show in a year at Westside Bowl with Spirit of the Bear opening for its first hometown show of 2025. The band released a new single (“Read My Mind”) two weeks ago with a new album on the way.

And a Mahoning Valley music tradition also returns Saturday for its 18th edition with Pabstolutely.

Royal Oaks, 924 Oak St., Youngstown, hosts the annual gathering, which raises money for The Purple Cat and Golden String Radio, which provide day-program alternatives for adults with disabilities.

The music starts at 12:30 p.m. with The Feral Cats, a band made up of Purple Cat clients. The rest of the lineup features The Flying Trees at 1:30 p.m., Interior Stations at 2:20 p.m., Thundervest at 3:15 p.m., The 8 Balls at 4 p.m., Punk Willie at 4:50 p.m., Rabbit Dog at 5:45 p.m., Brood X at 6:45 p.m., Nervous Aggression at 7:30 p.m. and Neighbor Dan at 8:20 p.m before Daggrs closes out the night at 9:15 p.m.

Admission is $10. There also will be a basket raffle, Royal Oaks BBQ, a food truck and plenty of the brew that gives the event its name.

• Sept. 15 is the deadline to register for Lit Youngtown’s 9th Fall Literary Festival, which takes place Oct. 16 to 18.

This year’s festival will feature 150 presenters from the U.S. and Canada, including writers, editors, translators, publishers, students, booksellers and program directors.

Featured presenters include poets Lauren Camp of New Mexico, Todd Davis of Central Pennsylvania, Kortney Morrow of Cleveland, fiction writer David Huebert of Halifax, Canada, and creative nonfiction writer Sean Prentiss of Vermont.

More than 20 publishers and booksellers are scheduled to take part in a bookfair as part of the event.

This year’s theme is “Rooted in Earth,” and programming will take place on the Youngstown State University campus and at St. John’s Episcopal Church and the Butler Institute of American Art.

The registration fee is $65 for general admission, $45 for presenters and bookfair table representatives, $20 for part-time faculty and graduate students and free for undergraduate and high school students. If space remains, general admission registration after Sept. 15 is $95.

Several programs as part of the festival are free and open to the public without registration.

• Speaking of Lit Youngstown, the nonprofit organization is seeking an outreach coordinator.

The newly created position will involve working with program administrators on a variety of projects, developing programming, leading writing groups and providing support for larger events, such as the literary festival.

The 24-hour-a-week position includes remote and in-person work in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Lit Youngstown will begin reviewing applications on Oct. 1. More information is available at lityoungstown.org.
