Packard Museum hosts annual car show

WARREN — The National Packard Museum’s annual car show is happening a little later in the summer, but car lovers can expect many of the same features at Saturday’s show.

Mary Ann Porinchak, executive director of the museum, said the event moved from July to August to accommodate the Mahoning Valley Corvettes club, its partner in recent years. The show is affiliated with the National Council of Corvette Clubs and needed to move so it wouldn’t conflict scheduling-wise with other NCCC events in the region.

“Being a little later in the year, we’re hoping people come out for one last summer fling with their vehicles before the fall season hits us,” Porinchak said. “We’re thrilled to have the corvette club helping us with this. It’s a big fundraiser for us, and they donate the proceeds back to help keep the museum running.”

Event Chair Mike Curtis said he thought they could approach 200 vehicles if the weather cooperates.

“It’s a great place to meet new people and hear stories about their cars,” Curtis said. “We always have a lot of interesting stories.”

The Corvettes & Classics Car Show will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday with registration starting at 9 a.m. The Packard Dixieland Band, direct by Daniel Carioti, will perform from noon to 2 p.m.

“We were so happy the Packard band was able to oblige (the schedule change),” Porinchak said. “They’re always the highlight of our show.”

The outdoor activities are free for spectators. Those who pay admission to the museum will be able to see its new exhibition on engineer Jesse G. Vincent and attend a seminar at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on “Col. Jesse G. Vincent: Packard’s Master Motor Builder.”

Vincent was a self-taught engineer who was awarded 162 patents during his 40-year career with Packard Motor Car Company. He designed the first V-12 automobile engine in 1915 and was the designer of the Liberty aircraft engine used in World War I and Packard’s Merlin aircraft engine and PT boat marine engine, both used in World War II.

The seminar will cover his life and contributions to automotive, aeronautical and marine history. A Merlin aircraft engine and a replica of Vincent’s 1929 Speedster test vehicle are featured in the exhibition.

“We’re hoping for lots of cars, lots of people and lots of fun,” Porinchak said.
