Finding humor in aging key to positive outlook

Typically, the topics covered for the Friday Prime Time page are relative to senior news and are educational.

Typically, the article I would write is relative to an experience at my job as the Trumbull County Senior Levy Administrator or a current topic well-timed with the season. To share job experiences recently would only bring more stress to your reading entertainment.

Having endured this winter in Northeast Ohio has been a challenging season with the frigid cold and many gray days. The majority of the population does not want any of that to return unless you are an Olympian on the beautiful mountains of Italy.

This is why I hope to bring laughter to at least a few minutes of reading this article and to bring at least a smile during these remaining days of winter. Our political climate and worldly news certainly can’t bring a light smile to your face, so for now, it’s time to reduce that stress and read on.

Humor helps to alleviate the challenges of growing older and fosters resilience among older adults. Humor can be a powerful coping mechanism allowing individuals to approach these changes with a lighter heart, so here are a few humorous quotations:

“Life begins at 40 — but so do fallen arches, rheumatism, faulty eyesight, and the tendency to tell a story to the same person, three or four times.” — Helen Rowland

Aging can’t be stopped but “We could certainly slow the aging process down if it had to work its way through Congress.” — Will Rogers

“Old age is like a plane flying through a storm. Once you’re aboard, there’s nothing you can do.” — Golda Meir

Like any machine, the body wears down, creaking and groaning with every step. This is reality and laughing about your own realities of aging could reduce anxiety and promote a positive outlook on living.

This is not meant to be laughter at another aging individual, but laughter within when dealing with your own personal difficulties. My husband has a sign that says something similar to “enjoy the ride because no one is getting out of this alive.”

“The older you get, the better you get. Unless you’re a banana.” — Betty White

Maybe the secret to Betty White’s longevity was her ability to laugh at aging. Sharing this humor, and laughing about aging, creates a shared experience and belonging that reduces the feeling of loneliness.

To embrace humor in aging lightens the emotional load and enhances well-being. Humorous stories told to the grandchildren and younger generation become treasured family memories to be long remembered.

What better way to be remembered than through your shared funny experiences of aging.

One of the best parts of getting together with what I fondly call “my cousin family,” is the laughter and retelling of stories from the past that focus on our aging parents or grandparents.
