Putting for a good time

Local Putt-Putt events keep older adults active, social

Seniors can enjoy some light activity during the spring and summer at discounted rates due to a partnership with Trumbull County SCOPE.

Enjoying the final sunny and warm days of summer is a great reason for older adults to get out of the house.

Putt-Putt of Warren offers them the opportunity for fun, exercise and camaraderie.

As children, Trumbull County residents in the 1960s and ’70s played miniature golf at the Putt-Putt of Warren on U.S. Route 422. The business has been open since 1962.

They may be older now, but if they want to feel like a kid again, 6 p.m. Thursday night is the prime time and place to get that feeling.

For the last two years, a collaboration between Trumbull County SCOPE and Putt-Putt of Warren offers an older adult night throughout its season, which wraps up Sept. 19, at a discounted rate of $3 per game.

“It is for socialization and exercise,” said Mike Wilson, director of SCOPE Senior Services, about why they decided to hold this type of event for older adults.

Kelly and Don Spencer of Warren, Arlene McCorry of Champion and Gary Hartman of Warren are regular attendees on Thursday night.

“I’ve been coming since May,” McCorry said. “I enjoy going to SCOPE in Warren and Newton Falls and I love Putt-Putt.”

The Spencers made this an entire night out for them. “We went out to dinner before we came,” Don Spencer said.

Hartman played golf for many years, but he doesn’t think that experience helps him on the miniature golf course.

Mike Kundus of Champion found the opposite to be true.

“I played Putt-Putt for hours here when I was a kid and off from school. My dad played golf and told me that Putt-Putt would ruin my golf game. One time my dad and I played golf and a hole was up a hill and it was easy for me. Putt-Putt helped my golf game.”

There were three courses for players to play. Each consisted of 18 holes. Some were more challenging than others, but each hole is a par 2, which means you should make the putt or hit the golf ball into the hole within two attempts.

Owner Roberta Michelle Cykon knew everyone’s name when they came to the counter to pay their fee, choose a golf ball from the numerous colors and get a club.

“Two courses are PPA regulated which means they are regulated through the Professional Putters Association. It is the organization that Don Clayton started when he started Putt-Putt,” Cykon said. The third course, which is just for fun, is unregulated and called Goofy Golf.

Cykon mentioned that the discount is not only for SCOPE members.

“I started the Trumbull County Senior Connection Facebook page for older adults 60 and older. You must be a Trumbull County resident and be 60 or over to get the discounted SCOPE rate.”

She also mentioned that older adults could receive the discount on other days of the week.

“They just have to have proof that they are an older adult aged 60 or older and they are a resident of Trumbull County.”

At the end of the game, it wasn’t about the score but about the fun the players had they had while they played. There was a lot of laughter between the foursome as they went from one Putt-Putt hole to the next.

Kelly Spencer said that this is an event that she looks forward to attending every week.

Starting at $2.99/week.
