Weathersfield trustees move to buy additional land

WEATHERSFIELD — Township trustees made another move Jan. 9 in their ongoing pursuit of development of a community park with a community center. Trustees approved buying land with a vacant home at 3726 Main Street for $43,500. The land and vacant home are owned by Michael Mousie and have a total market value of $29,900, according to Trumbull County Auditor records. NILES — Whether the Niles swimming pool will be repaired and opened again remains to be seen. That hasn’t stopped residents Aimee Cantola, the wife of newly elected 4th Ward Councilman Al Cantola, and Beth Nolen from pushing to have it opened even when it appears they are fighting a losing battle. Upgrades sought at Eastwood Field

NILES — A multimillion-dollar restoration project is under consideration for Eastwood Field with dollars being sought through the state capital budget for support. The stadium, which broke ground in 1998, is owned by the city and leased to the Cafaro Co. for $1 a year under a 200-year lease, according to Law Director Terry Swauger who said the tenant is responsible for the electric bill up to $23,000 annually with the city picking up electricity costs in excess of $23,000 up to $46,000. Nonprofit plans kickoff fundraiser

NILES — Playing it Forward of Niles is a new nonprofit organization made up of volunteers and is working to achieve 501(c)3 charitable organization status. Their mission is to provide new sports equipment, such as soccer balls, shin guards and spikes, to children in need in the Niles community. The group is working with local sports organizations such as Niles Youth Soccer League and Niles Little Red Dragons to ensure each child wanting to play has the proper sports equipment needed to participate and keep them safe.
