NILES — The Niles Historical Society’s monthly meeting will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Westenfield Room. The society will hold an open house 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Ward Thomas House, 503 Brown St., with the last tour beginning at 4 p.m. There will be a collection of vintage and community cookbooks displayed in the kitchen.

NILES — Completion of a water loop project on Difford Drive has stalled because the city must proceed with eminent domain on two properties to get easements to install a water line. City Council gave the green light to Law Director Terry Swauger to begin the eminent domain process to get easements from Maria Rosa, 1323 Difford Drive, and the Eastwood Arms Apartments. Residents in several areas of the city had complained of discolored water caused by sediment in dead-end water lines. LISBON — Niles native Vito Abruzzino is among three attorneys the Columbiana County Republican Party recommended to replace county Municipal Court Judge Charles “Chris” Amato. The GOP voted at Wednesday’s central and executive committee to forward Abruzzino’s name, as well as Tim McNicol, an assistant county prosecutor, and Amanda Banner, Columbiana city law director, for Gov. NILES — City Council passed an ordinance 4-3 Wednesday regulating dumpsters on residential and commercial properties, leaving some business owners questioning how much it will cost them and whether the new law will stand as a deterrent to other small-business owners looking to set up shop in the city. The dumpster ordinance requires a one-time $250 permit for commercial dumpsters used for six months or longer, and a $5 permit for temporary residential dumpsters on properties for 30 days or less. WEATHERSFIELD — The Mineral Ridge Dam at the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District is under an engineering review and could see millions of dollars in improvements in 2019.
