It always has been inconvenient and costly to get your car impounded, but new moves by the city of Niles and private tow companies have increased the fees residents pay and made a business out of impounding cars. Niles collected nearly $220,000 since creation of its impound lot in April 2016. This newfound revenue is being used to supplement the city’s police budget and enabling the purchase of new equipment. NILES — State Auditor Dave Yost has dispatched a member of the Local Government Services team to reconcile Niles’ books. Since 2015, project managers from the state auditor’s office have been reconciling the books, but the treasurer’s office was supposed to start doing it this year. However, numbers for January weren’t available because reconciliation was never performed because of the resignation of Treasurer Janet Jones and the shifting of personnel in the department that left no one trained to do the job. WARREN — Niles City Schools officials are accused of tampering with a key piece of evidence in the case of fired teacher Christopher Chieffo, according to a motion filed Feb. 14 in a lawsuit Chieffo filed against the district. Chieffo, 45, was terminated Jan. 18 by the Board of Education after being accused of using sick time while he was coaching boys golf for Howland Local Schools during an October tournament — accusations he claims were defamatory.
