Editor’s note: This is part of a weekly series marking the 120th anniversary of Niles native William McKinley’s U.S. presidency. On March 19, 1898, The Washington Post reported President William McKinley planted a tree the day before, “a sapling of the scarlet leaf oak variety, and the work of shoveling out the dirt and replacing it was performed by the President. Mahoning Valley names new manager for upcoming 2018 season

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers, in conjunction with the Cleveland Indians Player Development Staff, are pleased to announce that Jim Pankovits has been named manager of the Scrappers for the 2018 season. Pankovits, who spent the last 7 seasons in the Seattle Mariners Development system, will guide the Scrappers through their 20th season this June. Pankovits served most recently as a coach for High-A Modesto (2017) and also held the roles of Infield Coordinator (2014-16) and Double-A Manager (2011-13). Niles officials upset building repairs are taking so long

NILES — Some city officials are upset with the amount of time it has taken to put a new roof on the Safety Service building, but the law director said the company doing the work has honored the contract in its job performance. Campopiano Roofing was awarded a $341,000 roofing bid to replace roofs on the Niles fire substation, Safety Service Building, which includes Niles Municipal Court, and structures at Waddell and Stevens parks. Actions sought against Niles board president

WARREN — The plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed against Niles City Schools have asked the court to order a psychological evaluation and issue an emergency protection order against school board president Susan Giannetti Longacre, according to a motion filed in the suit. Christopher Chieffo, 45, was terminated Jan. 18 by the Board of Education after being accused of using sick time while he was coaching boys golf for Howland Local Schools during an October tournament.
