Niles native Dominic Fennell was sorting through his father’s belongings recently when he found a letter addressed to his father, Larry Fennell, from a longtime neighborhood friend. When he opened the envelope, a folded letter containing a now yellow and faded clipping was found. The clipping was a cut out copy of a poem Larry Fennell wrote while serving in Vietnam. The poem was published in the Army newspaper and it was cut out by that neighborhood friend who had kept it all those years. NILES — Four Niles Middle School students were among a small group of students from 20 districts throughout the state to present their findings on rovers moving on different surfaces to officials at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. The seventh-graders — Zoey Rawlings, Harper Sabatino, Ashton Russo and Tom Rossi — accompanied by teachers Gaye Breegle and Dan Rogge went to NASA where the students made a video presentation and explained what their rover did with various types of wheels attached to it as part of their class project. NILES — Niles Christian Assembly, 672 North Road has voted Pastor Aaron Newell to become their new senior pastor. Newell, who originally lived and ministered in Youngstown, has been a minister in Baltimore for the past nine years. He holds a degree from Southeastern University and will begin his position as senior pastor on Friday. The church will hold an official induction ceremony at a later date. Niles Christian Assembly is affiliated with the International Fellowship of Christian Assemblies.
NILES — The Niles Historical Society’s monthly open house of the Ward-Thomas House at 503 Brown St. will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday with the last tour beginning at 4 p.m. The membership meeting will be 10 a.m. Saturday. Plans for participation in Harry Stephens Hot Dog Day on July 1 will be discussed. The society will be selling its historical books, food and baked goods. Also, Heritage Day on the grounds of the museum will be Aug. 4. Artisans, crafters and vendors may sign up to take part by calling 330-652-8329.
