There is lots going on with the Tribune Chronicle this month, so get ready!
CONGRESSIONAL DEBATE: I am thrilled to be involved in the Tribune Chronicle's sponsorship of this week's 13th District Congressional debate. U.S. Rep. Timothy J. Ryan, Democratic incumbent, and Christopher DePizzo, Republican challenger, will face off in their only official debate -- right here in Trumbull County. The event is being held before a capacity crowd in the LaBrae High School Auditorium. (Here's a special shout-out to LaBrae School District for providing wonderful accommodations!)
The tickets certainly are a hot commodity. In fact, after "selling out" the first 530 seats, we asked LaBrae to open up additional seating in the auditorium allowing us to distribute more than 900 tickets to our readers. We have been asking our readers to help us compile the questions our Tribune Chronicle newsroom moderator will pose to the candidates on stage. If you have a specific question you'd like to suggest, you have until 5 p.m. today to email it to editor@tribtoday.com. List "Debate question" in the email's subject line.
We also will live stream the debate on our website at www.tribtoday.com beginning 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
ELECTION COVERAGE: The congressional race is not the only hot item on the Nov. 6 ballot.
Statewide, the governor's race between Ohio Attorney General Michael DeWine, the Republican nominee, and former federal consumer protection chief Richard Cordray, the Democratic nominee, has been generating much interest. Both these candidates spent time visiting with the Tribune Chronicle editorial board last week, and local coverage of their race is included on page A1 today.
Ohio Issue 1, intended to reduce the crime level and penalties of people convicted of drug crimes, also is generating much voter interest. Issue 1 would alter the state's constitution to reduce drug penalties and send fewer people to prison on drug charges.
Of course, there also are many local races and issues that will affect your county, township or municipality. Published in today's newspaper is a complete listing of all races and issues that local voters will see.
Be sure to log on to www.tribtoday.com the evening of Election Day, Nov. 6, for regular updates as the election unfolds, and then pick up the Tribune Chronicle the next morning for all the unofficial results of every item on the local ballot.
VETERANS DAY: Immediately after Election Day, we will roll right into Veterans Day. Again this year the Tribune Chronicle is organizing the Trumbull County Veterans Day Parade that steps off about 12:15 p.m., following the 11 a.m. Trumbull County Veterans Day Federation ceremony at First Presbyterian Church in Warren. As part of this important event, we invited all the Trumbull County veterans about whom we have been writing every Monday since Memorial Day to appear in the parade.
If all goes as planned, my husband and I will be riding in the parade again this year in our 1931 Model A, along with many other friends from the Penn-Ohio Model A Club, Five-Points Chapter. If you want to appear in the parade, it's not too late. Contact Tribune Chronicle community events coordinator Sue Shafer at sshafer@tribtoday.com or 330-841-1696 by this Thursday. Walking units, vehicles, floats or other types of units are encouraged.
GIVING THANKS: And finally, it's already time to start submitting what you're thankful for. Please share it with us at the Tribune Chronicle so we can list them all in the Thanksgiving Day newspaper. Send your thankful thoughts to givingthanks@tribtoday.com or mail them to Tribune Chronicle, attn: Giving Thanks, 240 Franklin St. SE, Warren, Ohio 44483. Deadline is Nov. 12. Limit your submission to 25 words or less. We also encourage group participation from school classrooms, senior citizen centers and others.
And that's just November! Keep reading for plenty more of events and coverage coming in December.
