Cortland council considers rezoning former golf course property

CORTLAND -- A portion of a former golf course could be rezoned to allow for large residential lots, according to legislation under consideration by Cortland City Council.
Council held a public hearing Monday to rezone Walnut Run Resources Plat No. 1 from a Service District to a Residential District.
Attorney Tom Nader of Warren, representing property owner WRR, told council the proposed zoning change would help protect the residential character of the former golf course property by limiting future commercial development.
“Right now, it is unrestricted commercial development, which is not what WRR wants to do,” Nader said during the hearing.
The attorney said the property owners already have developed some of the land surrounding the former clubhouse into single-family homes. The proposed rezoning would allow them to continue residential development on oversized lots while preserving some of the golf course’s existing water features.
The zone change, if approved, would complete the replatting of the former golf course into a residential district, and create three oversized, single-family lots. No members of the public spoke either for or against the proposed zoning change Monday night, and the change request received its first reading during the regular council meeting.
In other business Monday, council:
* Approved a property replat in the area of Fowler and Delbert streets.
* Advertised for bids for a new generator to serve the city’s water well pumps.
* Gave second reading to an ordinance amending city regulations concerning driving on streets posted as closed.
* Received a $75,000 grant reimbursement from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency for the completed salt bin project. The finance department also reported that the city has not yet received its delayed property tax settlements from the county. Council was warned a resolution transferring money from the general fund to levy funds may be necessary at the next council meeting to make sure there's enough money to cover city obligations until the second-half tax collections arrive.
* Announced plans for Trunk or Treat on Saturday. More than 40 participants have signed up, with organizers preparing to distribute parking assignments and other information.
* Swore in firefighter Derek Sandor, a 2021 Lakeview High School graduate who began his fire service career as a volunteer and subsequently completed paramedic training. Council President John Picuri administered the new firefighter's oath.
