Olison leads YSU past SEMO, 97-79

In his second game at Youngstown State, Tevin Olison scored 27 points to lead the Penguins to their first win of the 2021-2022 season, a 97-79 win at Southeast Missouri on Saturday night.

The Penguins (1-1) trailed 39-37 at halftime, but outpaced the Redhawks 60-40 in the second half for the victory.

Olison sank four of his seven shots from beyond the arc and added six rebounds, four assists and didn’t turn the ball over.

In addition, four other Penguins finished in double figures.

Garrett Covington posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Michael Akuchie scored 16 points and snagged six boards. Shemar Rathan-Mayes scored 15 points, while Dwayne Cohill netted 10, mostly on drives to the basket.

Freshman Luke Chicone played 17 minutes for YSU, and scored seven points and added four assists and no turnovers.

As a team, YSU shot 31-for-63 from the field and 7-of-20 from 3-point range. The Penguins also hit on 28 of 36 free throws.

After struggling inside against Penn State on Wednesday night, YSU outscored SEMO 36-24 in the paint and outrebounded the Redhawks 43-33. The Penguins parlayed 13 offensive boards into 20 second-chance points.

SEMO (1-1), which had upset Missouri State earlier in the week, picked up 17 points apiece from Eric Reed Jr. and DQ Nicholas.

YSU is off until Friday, when it begins a 3-day slate of home games as part of a multiteam event. The Penguins open the weekend with St. Thomas (MN) at 5 o’clock.
