Men win on road buzzer-beater

DAYTON — Senior Garrett Covington made a layup as time expired to lift the Youngstown State men’s basketball team to a 74-72 win over Wright State on Friday night at the Nutter Center.

Fellow senior Naz Bohannon led the Penguins with 28 points and eight rebounds. Covington and Michael Akuchie scored 12 each as YSU (7-4, 3-4 Horizon League) played again without junior guard Darius Quisenberry who is nursing an injured ankle.

Wright State’s Tim Finke hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 72-72 with 13.4 seconds left. Bohannon pulled up for a jumper at the left elbow before finding Covington under the basket for the game-winning basket as the clock expired.

The Penguins led by as many as 13 points, 48-35, with 16:50 remaining in the game. Wright State (7-3, 5-2) used a 21-7 run over the next seven minutes to take a 56-55 lead at the 9:42 mark.

The Raiders lengthened their advantage to 63-58, but Bohannon scored the next 10 YSU points to put the Penguins on top 68-65 ith 3:09 left. Bohannon shot 11-for-19 from the field.

After Wright State’s Loudon Love gave the Raiders a 69-68 lead. Shemar Rathan-Mayes hit a jumper with 1:52 to go and Bohannon’s layup at 1:04 gave the Penguins a three-point edge, 72-69.

Rathan-Mayes finished with nine points and five assists. Myles Hunter added nine points off the bench and Akuchie finished with nine rebounds.

The teams play again today at 3 p.m.
