Late Oakland run results in loss for men

In a game that featured 10 lead changes and seven ties, Oakland used an 8-0 run late in the second half to turn a 61-60 deficit into a 68-61 lead with 4:17 left, and Youngstown State could get no closer than three the rest of the way in an 81-74 Horizon League loss on the Golden Grizzlies home court.

Jalen Moore scored all eight of the points and finished with 31 points and 12 assists.

The Penguins fall to 7-7 overall and 3-7 in the Horizon League while the Golden Grizzlies improve to 5-12 overall and 5-5 in league play.

For the second straight game, freshman Myles Hunter scored a career-high 18 points with four 3-pointers for the Penguins. Senior Garrett Covington poured in 16 points with seven rebounds, while freshman Shemar Rathan-Mayes scored 15 points and had seven assists.

In the first half, the Penguins shot 47.4 percent from the floor and led by as many as 10 points, 31-21, with 6:10 left in the half. The Golden Grizzlies whittled their way back within striking distance, but the Penguins led 41-39 at halftime.

Youngstown State will play eight of their final 10 games at the Beeghly Center starting with a two-game series Friday and Saturday against Illinois-Chicago (6-4, 3-2 Horizon). Tipoff for both games is set for 5 p.m. and both will be part of a doubleheader with the women’s team.
