Things on the Horizon

So much for a dead period in basketball season. Recruiting is still going on, but there’s been a shake up in the Horizon League. Tuesday, the Missouri Valley Conference invited Valparaiso to replace Wichita State, which left the MVC for the American Athletic Conference. Valparaiso has yet to comment on the move, but it’s one that seems imminent starting July 1. Valparaiso made the move to the Horizon beginning in 2007 and was in the Summit League prior to the Horizon. The Summit League is the former Mid-Continent Conference, a league YSU was in until the 2000-01 season. The ...

It’s more than the numbers in track

Track and field means features, stories of different athletes and how they’ve overcome struggles on and off the track. Inherently, it’s about numbers, boring old numbers. These athletes don’t see these statistics as cumbersome. A scoreboard flashing those seconds, minutes, feet and inches, displaying the heart of track and field, excites those athletes. It should. It means one step closer to the ultimate goal — early June and the state track and field meet. It starts with the district meets in Division I through III, starting May 17. With every great show, which leads ...

Tourney games get started this week

High school spring sports athletes and teams begin their postseason trek this week and several teams in Trumbull County appear to have legitimate shots at the regional tournament and from there, the state final four. In baseball this week, sectional tournament games are scheduled Monday and Tuesday in Division II, Tuesday and Wednesday in Division III, Wednesday and Thursday in Division IV and Thursday and Friday in Division I. The schedule is the same next week in the district tournament. Sectional tournament games are played at the better seeded team’s home site, while district ...

Time for goodbye to Wahoo

One part of me — a diehard Cleveland Indians fan since 1966 — hates to say this, and I know a lot of you out there don’t want to hear it, but it is time for the franchise to stop using Chief Wahoo as a team logo. Understand, I am not saying that everyone who has Chief Wahoo logos on their clothes or cars or hats should get rid of them. I have a sticker on my car and plenty of clothing with the Chief’s emblem on it. I did ask my wife a couple of years ago to try to find clothing that did not include the logo when she was shopping for birthday or Christmas presents, but I ...

An early look at baseball in area

People always seem to be slightly annoyed by those way-too-early preseason polls that media outlets present for differing college sports. And yet, everyone looks at them. They’re too enticing not to. It’s like you want to get mad — or excited — over something you know means nothing. Personally, I think it’s fun to make predictions before you have any idea on how good teams are. Now, if you use those same preseason rankings and predictions to determine who earns certain berths in playoffs or bowl games, etc., that’s another issue entirely. The same can be said for ...

Can Cavs ‘turn it on’ in playoffs?

Over the next few weeks — as few as two or as many as eight — we will find out if a good team not playing very well can suddenly “turn it on” when necessary. The defending NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers began defense of their title on Saturday with a 109-108 win over the Indiana Pacers. Indiana came into the game having won five games in a row, a streak that was necessary for the Pacers to even make it into the playoffs. The Cavaliers, on the other hand, ended what has to be considered a disappointing regular season in a disjointed fashion. The Cavs were inconsistent in ...
